Using OP4W with Windows 98

OfficePower for Windows Version 3 (or later) is supported on the general release version of Windows 98 (which identifies itself as version "4.10.1998"). OfficePower for Windows version 5 (or later) is supported on Windows 98 Second Edition (which identifies itself as version "4.10.2222A").

There is a known problem with the Winsock 2 TCP/IP stack supplied with Windows 98. The problem only affects file transfer FROM the PC using OP4W Terminal (WVT) - the symptom of the problem will be an error message like "Data read from sock failed, errno = xx" where xx is normally 32 or 131.

To avoid this problem, do ONE of the following:
  • Use OP4W Workspace for all actions involving transfer of files from the PC to the server - Workspace is not affected by the problem.
  • Revert to WinSock 1.1. (This option may not be available on all PCs.) From the Start menu, select Settings then Control Panel and then Add/Remove Programs; on the Install/Uninstall tab you will find an entry Restore Winsock 1.1 Configuration.
  • Switch off the Fast File Transfer option in WVT. Close any open WVT windows, then edit the file pwpc.ini in your Windows folder (normally c:\windows\pwpc.ini), find the line that reads DoFFT=yes and replace it by DoFFT=no.

There is a reported problem with installation of OP4W on some Windows 98 PCs that have certain specific software drivers installed prior to the attempt to install OP4W. The symptom is a failure (GPF) in the module ISINST30. This problem is still under investigation, and details of the eventual resolution will be published here when available. In the meantime, you should be able to install OP4W on affected machines by either of the following workarounds:

  • Disable the Microsoft Intellipoint Wheel before running SETUP. To do this, press Ctrl+Alt+Delete, select MsWheel from the list and click End Task. (After installing OP4W, you must in any case reboot the PC, which will re-enable the Wheel.)

  • Install OP4W with the PC running in "safe mode". However, since your CD will not be accessible in safe mode, you must first copy the installation files to hard disk (copy the folder OP4W, and its four subfolders, from the CD to your hard disk) or diskette (copy the contents of the CD folder \OP4W\Disk1 to a blank formatted diskette, and repeat for the Disk2, Disk3 and Disk4 folders). Now reboot the PC into SAFE MODE - from the Start menu select Help then search for safe mode to learn how to do this. Run the OP4W SETUP utility (c:\op4w\disk1\setup.exe if you copied the files to hard disk, or a:\setup from diskette 1 of the four). When installation is complete, reboot the PC normally.

There is a slightly obscure problem affecting Windows 98 users with large discs who have used FAT 32 to create large disc partitions (greater than approximately 2 GigaBytes in size).

If you use "Bulk Fetch" or "Fetch Mail Offline" in OP4W Workspace to fetch a mail message which has attachments, the action may fail with an error message "Unable to fetch details file" or, occasionally, other error messages. Mail messages without attachments and files held in OfficePower folders can be fetched without problem.

This happens when the disc drive to which you fetch the data has more than 2 Gigabytes of FREE disc space. If this problem occurs, you will have to repeat the "fetch" using another drive (or another PC) with less free space.
